UPSC forms in demand as techies look for greener pastures
"If recession pushed a large chunk of youth towards PSU jobs, it was the Sixth Pay Commission implemented by the end of 2008, that further added to the numbers. "
Demand for government jobs has shot up
considerably this year going by the number of aspirants rushing
to fill up UPSC forms. There has been nearly a 100 per cent rise
in the number of people seeking the forms this year, with many
techies among them planning a sarkari turn in
their career.
If recession pushed a large chunk of youth towards PSU jobs, it
was the Sixth Pay Commission implemented by the end of 2008,
that further added to the numbers.
Officers Academy, a coaching institute that trains people
aspiring for public sector jobs, has found the demand for UPSC
forms doubling as compared to last year. UPSC covers a large
number of central government jobs including Indian
Administrative Services (IAS), Combined Defence Services (CDS)
and the banking sector.
The Academy also found that until 2008, the stock of UPSC forms
at post offices in the city was sufficient to meet Hyderabad’s
demand. Now there is a massive shortage. “At the General Post
Office (GPO) alone there is a demand for over 12,000 forms while
their stock is nothing more than 5,000 to 6,000,” said Capt. R
Sircar, director of the Academy.
GPO officials confirmed this data and said that the rush for
applications this session has been unexpected. “September to
January is the peak time for sale of UPSC forms and we get about
1,000 (approx) forms every month. Unlike other years, this time
the demand seems to be way more than the supply,” said E V Rao,
chief postmaster of the Hyderabad GPO. He said that the GPO had
received about 5,000 forms in mid-January and had to later call
for another 2,000 after agitated UPSC aspirants gheraoed the GPO
on Thursday due to the unavailability of forms.
